What is the greatest Christmas Movie of all time?
One of the best Christmas movies of all time is Joyeux Noël. It is set in 1914, five months into World War I. Amid brutal trench warfare, munitions began to run out and huge losses of soldiers meant a shortage of men. Commanders began to reconsider their strategies following stalemates and indecisive results across multiple campaigns.
As Christmas approached, French, German and British soldiers were reminded of what time of year it was and, in the spirit of Christmas, began crossing trenches to exchange greetings and to talk. In other places they ventured into “no man’s land” to mingle, exchange food, and even play soccer. Joint burial ceremonies occurred, and prisoner exchanges took place. As Christmas Eve approached many places were marked by carol singing and church services. In English speaking countries the night became known as The Christmas Truce, in Germany as Weihnachtsfrieden, and in France as Trêve de Noël.
It was a symbolic moment of peace and humanity amidst one of the most violent events of human history. Christmas reminded the soldiers they were not just citizens of a country, but they were also citizens of a greater Kingdom.
This has been an incredibly tough couple of years for many of you as you have led your families through the pandemic. It has been made harder by health orders and mandates. Our prayer is that in the midst of this disorder that the Prince of Peace would touch the hearts of each family, and family member. Our prayer is that during this sacred season you would remind them what truly matters. (Adapted from Christian Schools Australia)
