We use spoken and written words every single day to communicate ideas, thoughts, and emotions to those around us. Sometimes we communicate successfully, and sometimes we’re not quite so successful. A good vocabulary can help us say what we mean. Here are some new words to add to your student’s vocabulary.


The Incarnation (noun)

The act of the Son of God becoming a man.

e.g. The Incarnation happened when God the Son became a human being. His name is Jesus


betrothed (adjective)

Engaged or pledged to be married to a person.

e.g. Mary was betrothed to Joseph


Ceasar Augustus (proper noun)

The Roman Emperor at the time of Jesus’ birth.

e.g. A decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. (Luke 2:1)


Swaddling Cloths (noun)

Long narrow strips of cloth used to wrap a newborn baby.

e.g. “You will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger”. (Luke 2:12).


goodwill (noun)

Friendliness and kindness.

e.g. “And on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.” (Luke 2:14)
