TAFE AT SCHOOL

In many Australian states and territories students are able to commence TAFE studies whilst completing their home schooling senior studies.

CHECK YOUR LOCAL TAFE TO DETERMINE WHETHER A “TAFE AT SCHOOL” PROGRAMME IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR STATE OR TERRITORY.

TAFE courses such as Certificate 1, 2, 3, or 4 can be done whilst students are doing their Years 10-12 studies. These courses can reduce the students’ study/workload when they commence diploma studies and higher qualifications after finishing their Year 10 or Year 12 studies.

This programme is called various names such as:

  • “TAFE at School” in Qld, Tas;

  • “TAFE at School” or “TAFE NSW vocational education course” in NSW;

  • “Courses for School Students” TAFESA in South Australia.

The possibilities in some states are that students can earn school-based apprenticeships or traineeships. These can lead to post-school studies such as diplomas, degrees or other pathways to university.

ADVANTAGES OF DOING TAFE AT SCHOOL

Whilst doing their senior studies as home schoolers, students can get:

  • An experience of tertiary study

  • Personal confidence

  • An idea of the world of work and workplace culture

  • Vocational qualifications and skills

  • A formal qualification

  • Accelerated pathways to higher tertiary qualifications

FREE TAFE COURSES

There is a skills shortage in Australia. Many TAFE courses are being subsidised by government, so that for those courses, students can enrol in a “Fee Free” course.

Check your local TAFE for details of courses that are “Fee Free” and for courses that require fee payments.
